The Stories We Tell Ourselves

45 Laings Rd, Lower Hutt

View map

At the heart of every art museum is its collection—but what inspires a work of art to be made and why is it collected for the community?

The Stories We Tell Ourselves considers the importance of artists to The Dowse Collection and how the stories they tell us through their art helps define who we are today. Highlighting how people create meaning through art, this exhibition brings together anecdotes about personal memories, oral traditions, the environment and social sciences with a selection of art The Dowse has collected over the past four years.

SOLO 2021

45 Laings Rd, Lower Hutt

View map

SOLO 2021 is a snapshot of contemporary art practice in Te Whanganui-a-Tara right here, right now. Featuring five extraordinary new projects by Chris Ulutupu, Dianne Prince, Gabby O’Connor, Martin Awa Clarke Langdon and Peter Deckers.

The Dowse asked the artists what they would like to do—perhaps something they’ve been dreaming of making or been mulling over—and help them realise their project in an entire gallery space of their own. SOLO 2021 is a biennial exhibition by The Dowse to showcase and support local Wellington artists by actively commissioning and presenting new work.
